Northern Afghanistan,

£1,500 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books

Yate, as a member of the Afghan Boundary Commission, was in an ideal position to focus on the events of 1885 to 1887, during which time the Afghan frontier was demarcated, negotiated, and finally settled. In March 1885, Yate was at the centre of the Panjdeh incident - the closest Britain and Russia ever came to direct war. He received the Companion of the Order of the Star of India in 1887, the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1888, and the Afghan Order of Hurmat. First edition; 8vo (23 x 15.5 cm); 2 large folding maps to rear, 1 further map in text; publisher's original red cloth, gilt lettering to upper board and spine, touch of fading to spine, a near fine copy; viii, 430 pp. Yakushi Y14.
