Scarce first edition of this early treatise on Muslim society in nineteenth-century India, particularly the Shia Muslims in Lucknow. Biddy Timms married her husband Meer Hassan Ali, an Indian Muslim teaching in London, in 1817 after which they moved to Lucknow. She spoke fluent Hindustani, and so had access to her husband's world and society. First edition; 2 vols, 8vo (22 x 14.5 cm); armorial bookplates to pastedowns, contemporary half calf, marbled boards all edges speckled red, upper hinge of vol. II starting with small chip to foot of spine, a very good copy; xix, 395; viii, 427 pp.
