MAP OF THE LOWER COMSTOCK AND EMIGRANT CONSOLIDATED MINING COS. MINES, LYON CO. NEV. A map of the mines found along the southern portion of the Comstock Lode near Silver City, Nevada, lithographed by Grafton Tyler Brown, the first African-American lithographer in the West, the first and only African-American to draw cityscapes, and later, the first professional African-American landscape artist of the Pacific Northwest. The map, likely produced as a mine company hand-out for shareholders and other interested parties, shows the mines along the Comstock Lode to the west of Silver City that belonged to the Lower Comstock Mining Company, the Emigrant Consolidated Mining Company, the Dayton Mining Company and the Silver Hill Mining Company. The map also provides a sketch of the business locations in Silver City that were essential to the transaction of business at the time. These businesses include the Lower Comstock Shaft & Hoisting Works; a hotel; an Express Office; and the Devil's Gate Toll House, where travellers had to stop before using the toll road to the gold and silver fields of Virginia City. The five mills that were used to extract the silver from mined ore are also shown, including Trench Mill, Bacon Mill, Hope Mill, and two additional unnamed mills.
