The Second World War. First US editions, first printings of vols. II-VI, third printing of vol. I; an outstandingly provenanced set uniting two of the key figures involved in securing US serialization rights for The Second World War: inscribed by Churchill in volumes IV and VI: "To Andrew Heiskell from Winston S. Churchill," dated 1951 and 1954 respectively; volume IV with a typed letter signed on Time-Life stationery from Walter Graebner to Haiskell: "Dear Bob, I am sending you a copy of the 'Hinge of Fate' inscribed to you by Mr. Churchill"; additionally signed and dated in ink in volume II, "Winston S. Churchill 1949". Laid-into vol. I is a pre-printed presentation slip: "With all good wishes from Winston S. Churchill".Andrew Heiskell (1915-2003) started at Life magazine in 1938 "to produce and edit pictorial articles about science and medicine... Two years later he moved from editorial duties to concentrate on business, and at the age of 30 he was named publisher of Life, the popular photojournalism weekly that provided images of the war years to many millions in the era before television" (New York Times obituary). He retired from Time Inc. as chairman in 1980 after a 43-year career. It was Heiskell who memorably told his staff, "Let's always remember that the Churchill Memoirs are the biggest literary and historical project that Life, or for that matter any other publication, has ever undertaken".
