The Gospel of Luke, and the Acts of the Apostles, in Bengali. Later edition of this translation by the British orientalist William Yates, following its publication in 1845 in his revised version of the New Testament. Yates died before he could finish his revisions, and the project was subsequently overseen by his missionary colleague John Wenger. Yates (1792-1845) arrived in Calcutta in 1815 and, excepting a short period of home leave, spent the remainder of his life in Asia, where his Bengali-language rendering of the Bible took a decade to complete. He was also "a deeply read classical scholar, a Hebraist, and a student of Chinese" (ODNB).This copy has a cancel title page dated 1849. The sheets were printed in a run of 5,000 copies in 1848.
