BIBLE IN ASIA.
Inquire · Offered by Peter Harrington
Isaiah and Daniel in Bengali. Later edition of this translation by the British missionary William Yates (1792-1845), following its publication in an edition of the entire Old Testament in 1844. Yates's Bengali-language rendering of the Bible took a decade to complete. Yates arrived in Calcutta in 1815 and, excepting a short period of home leave, spent the remainder of his life in Asia. "As well as an orientalist, he was a deeply read classical scholar, a Hebraist, and a student of Chinese" (ODNB).
