Genesis and Part of Exodus in Bengali. Later edition of this translation by the British missionary William Yates (1792-1845), whose Bengali-language rendering of the Bible took a decade to complete. His version of Genesis and Exodus was first published in 1842, in a volume covering the Old Testament up to Esther. Here, the text extends to the end of Chapter 20 of Exodus.Yates arrived in Calcutta in 1815 and, with the exception of a short period of home leave, spent the remainder of his life in Asia. "As well as an orientalist, he was a deeply read classical scholar, a Hebraist, and a student of Chinese" (ODNB).
