Memoirs of Celebrated Female Sovereigns. First edition of this history of female governance ranging from Cleopatra to Elizabeth I. The distinguished Anglo-Irish historian Anna Jameson (1794-1860) was admired by figures such as the Brownings, Lady Byron, and Mary Shelley.Jameson has been posited as a proto-feminist, as "almost all her work was about women and, she claimed, designed for women readers and although she was never a self-claimed feminist, her writing nevertheless developed a feminist polemic" (ODNB). Jameson also "became a mentor to a younger generation of women writers and artists, in particular the influential feminists Barbara Bodichon and Bessie Rayner Parkes" (ODNB).
