London and its Celebrities is inscribed by the author on the first volume's title page: "Dr Francis Smith, with the author's kind regards". A label is mounted on the front free endpaper of the first Memorials volume presenting the work to a British historian and biographer: "Presented to Philip Ziegler by his colleagues on the committee of the London Library to mark his retirement as chairman in which office he served from 1979-1985. 16th July 1985". Ziegler wrote the authorized biographies of Mountbatten, Harold Wilson, and Edward Heath.
