First edition, presentation copy, inscribed on the first blank in a contemporary hand, "Robert Vigne, presented by the Chief Commissioner B.K. Col. Maclean C.B. at the request of H. Vigne."Appointed chief commissioner in October 1852, Colonel Maclean (1810-1874) was also the territory's first and only lieutenant-governor, holding the position from March 1860 until December 1864. Mendelssohn considered his work to be "one of the best in the subject."Herbert Vigne (1821-1895) emigrated to the Cape in 1844 and established the town of Greyton a decade later. In 1856, he was appointed a magistrate in British Kaffraria, in which capacity he corresponded with the author; data reported by Vigne for the 1857 census is included in the final folding table. The recipient (1807-1876), Herbert's brother, spent time in the region in 1847 while visiting him.
