Madame Solario. First UK edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the acquaintance who discovered that she wrote the anonymously published novel: "Nancy Spain, from G. T. Huntington". The author has additionally inscribed "with thanks" on the front free endpaper. This copy was photographed in Spain's tell-all article for the Daily Express of 15 December 1956.Began decades earlier, the work swiftly became a succès de scandale following its anonymous publication in America earlier the same year. The New York Times review opened: "The author of this extraordinary novel has chosen to remain anonymous. Curious, the mind invents fantastic impossibilities: Henry James crossed with Ivy Compton-Burnett rendered by E. M. Forster? Whatever the source, the controlling hand is strong, highly skilled and very sure". Huntington's diaries reveal her ambivalence around the novel's extraordinary success, and her conflicting desire for recognition and fear of exposure.
