STANLEY, Henry Morton.
Inquire · Offered by Peter Harrington
Through the Dark Continent, First edition of Stanley's account of his Trans-African Expedition of 1874-7, the "largest African expedition ever seen" (ODNB). Exploring equatorial Africa and, in particular, the Great Lakes regions, Stanley finally dispelled Livingstone's notion that the Lualaba was the source of the Nile and "vindicated Speke's claim that the lake seen on his expedition with Burton was indeed one of the sources" (Howgego).
