Our Journal. A Paper for the Men of the 2nd Battalion 14th Regiment, "Prince of Wales' Own". First editions, a broken but substantial run of this rare regimental newspaper, with no copies of any volume recorded in commerce or institutionally. Two volumes are signed on the pastedowns by Captain Cecil Morris Lester, who is listed in O'Donnell's history of the regiment as the newspaper's first editor. His completed January 1888 subscription slip is loosely inserted.The 2nd Battalion, 14th Regiment was raised in 1858. In 1880 it was sent to India as part of the Second Anglo-Afghan War, stationed at Nowshera and Sialkot. In July 1881 Our Journal was first released, a monthly newspaper of approximately 10 pages each, compiling regimental news, results from sports competitions, submissions of poetry and prose, and puzzles. The editors wrote often in the first volume about the difficulty of finding contributors and funding, but by Volume 6 that support was forthcoming.Lester (1859-1898) "had twenty years' service in the Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment, which he entered as a second lieutenant in 1878, becoming lieutenant in the following year and captain in 1885... He served in the Afghan war on 1879-80, which Roberts's march made famous, and received a medal for the Kama expedition" (Evening Observer, p. 5).
