The polar vision of Wally Herbert First edition of this collection of 20 lithographs from Herbert's original paintings, number 3 of 40 "special collector's boxed set", each print signed by Herbert in the lower left. This set includes an extra lithograph, not called for. Each lithograph was printed in a limitation of 250 - the remaining 210 were likely offered individually. The seasoned polar explorer Walter William "Wally" Herbert (1934-2007) started his career in 1955 working for the Falkland Islands Dependency Survey in Antarctica, mapping the north-eastern end of the Antarctic peninsula by dog sledge. He later surveyed a large area of the Queen Maud range, ascending Mount Nansen in the early 1960s, and in 1964 trekked the routes of Otto Sverdrup and Frederick Cook from Greenland to Ellesmere Island. From 1968 to 1969, Herbert led the British Trans-Arctic Expedition, an overland 6110-kilometre crossing of the Arctic Ocean from Alaska to Spitsbergen. While taking a brief break from exploring, Herbert was invited by the National Geographic Society to examine Peary's records of his North Pole journey and to write an article for the National Geographic Magazine, later expanding his article into a book. In his later years, Herbert turned to painting in the family home at Rowan Cottage, Inverness-shire.
