New York: Published at the Brother Jonathan Office, 1858. First edition. With 8 wood-engraved plates of fish. 64 pp. 1 vols. 8vo (6-1/2 x 4-1/16 inches). Original buff illustrated wrappers. Wrappers soiled and worn, some losses at top of front wrapper; early owner markings in ink on wrappers and verso of most plates. Very good. With custom quarter morocco clamshell and chemise. First edition. With 8 wood-engraved plates of fish. 64 pp. 1 vols. 8vo (6-1/2 x 4-1/16 inches). The very rare first edition, in the original wrappers. Van Winkle knew of only two copies, those in his collection. This copy matches most closely his Copy A in size and arrangement of the plates, except that there is an eighth plate, Cat-fish, facing page 34, which was present in his Copy B (facing page 35) but not his Copy A. Van Winkle notes that "Since there is no list of illustrations, it may be assumed that the difference in the plates is due to the binder, and is not a 'point' of issue." In the lower margin of the Brook Trout plate facing page 13 is the printed note, "All the Drawings by B. Day - from live fish in the Aquarium at Barnum's American Museum, New York."
