New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1971. Love doesn't just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread; remade all the time, made new First edition, signed by the author on the title page. A superb science fiction novel, The Lathe of Heaven is set in Le Guin's hometown of Portland, Oregon, projected into the year 2002, in a world beleaguered by food-shortages, climate change, and war in the Middle East. In it, the fabric of reality is warped and woven by the dreams of one man, the draftsman George Orr, who becomes paranoid of his own dreams and takes to drug abuse to suppress them. The work was serialized in Amazing Stories earlier the same year. It won the Locus award for best novel and was later adapted into films in 1980 and 2002. Octavo. Original blue quarter cloth, spine lettered in gilt, green paper-covered boards, top edge blue. With dust jacket. Christmas 1971 gift inscription ("Hope you find this interesting and amusing. The author is a close friend of ours") and ink price to front free endpaper. Light rubbing to extremities; jacket price-clipped, faintly toned and marked, edges lightly creased with a couple of nicks: a very good copy in very good jacket. Currey, p. 304; not in Locke.
