A key work in American science fiction and in the career of H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937). Three hundred copies were printed by Lovecraft's friend Paul Cook, but the book was not published. It is reported that Barlow bound fewer than ten copies circa 1935/36, one in full leather for Lovecraft, and others for private circulation among members of Lovecraft's circle, with his own copyright notice. Unbound sets of the sheets were also distributed. After Barlow's death, August Derleth gained control of the remaining copies in 1952, about 150 sets, and sold unbound sheets until the early 1960s, when 100 copies were were bound uniformly. This copy has the Arkham cancel copyright slip listing dates through 1947 (Currey state A with titles in bold) and is in a simple binding in drab card cover with three staples, so it is an early set of sheets from Derleth's distribution. With a loosely inserted autograph of H.P. Lovecraft: an envelope, postmarked 17 December 1932 and addressed to R.H. Barlow, Esq., in the hand of H.P.
