Excellent novella of New England history, strange commerce, and genealogy, the account of Robert Olmstead, a young man on a low-budget antiquarian tour of New England. He strays from the known geography of Massachusetts into Innsmouth, a dilapidated seaport town that is one of Lovecraft's most notable creations. The only book by Lovecraft published during the author's lifetime, crudely printed by William Crawford, in a small edition in April 1936, about 150 copies of which were bound in black cloth, as here, before November of that year; the balance of the edition was spoiled or otherwise lost.
