First edition · Signed · In dust jacket
London: Macmillan & Co. Ltd, 1953. First British edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. The UK edition of Vonnegut's first novel, published in an edition of 3000 copies, one thousand of which, the publisher told the bibliographers Asa Pieratt and Jerome Klinkowitz, were pulped. viii, 352 pages. First UK edition (first and only printing). A very good copy with foxing to the page block and two small owner names on the half-title, else very good in red cloth. The dust jacket is foxed at the flap folds and the rear panel but is otherwise much nicer than usually found, with very little spine fading and only slight chipping to the edges. This copy has the second state dust jacket, with the original price clipped and the reduced price of 4 shillings stamped on the flap. Signed by Vonnegut on the title page with a self-portrait drawing. The signature has bled through in a few spots to the dedication page. Scarce signed. This copy is housed in a black clamshell box with a red leather label of the sort that Vonnegut's screenprinter, Joe Petro III, commissioned. From the collection of Tom Garner.
