Small quarto (8 5/16 x 6 1/4 inches; 212 x 159 mm.). 225, [3, blank] pp. Six inserted color plates, twenty full-page and forty-two smaller black and white illustrations in the text. Publisher's dark green cloth with color pictorial label on front cover. Spine lettered in gilt. Pictorial dust jacket. Apart from two very small holes in the spine of the dust jacket and minimal wear to dust jacket extremities, this is a very fine copy of this notoriously rare book. Preserved in a quarter green morocco over marbled boards clamshell case, spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments. This edition contains a limitation leaf inserted after the title-page bearing the following statement: “The autographed edition of this book is limited to one hundred copies, none of which will be offered for sale. This copy is number 85. It is presented with the compliments of the author.” Signed: Beatrix Potter. This signed limited edition was issued to reserve copyright and released concurrently with the first trade edition. Beatrix Potter considered this tale of a miniature, animal-run traveling circus to be "too personal [and] autobiographical," making her reluctant to publish it in England. Instead, she arrange
