Original cloth, a.e.g. Back outer hinge cracked on Alice, spine darkened, and with overall light soiling and rubbed corners; Looking-Glass very lightly rubbed all over with a bump to top corners. In cloth wrappers. Thirteenth Thousand of Alice; first edition of Looking-Glass, first issue with "wabe" misspelled. Illustrations by John Tenniel. [xii], 192; [xii], 192 pp. 2 vols. 8vo. Alice is signed on the title-page "Lydia Margt. Hobson from Caroline H. Dodgson [sister of Lewis Carroll] 1868." and "Through the Looking-Glass" is inscribed on half-title "Henry and Mrs. H. Hobson with the Author's kind regards Christmas 1871." Henry Hobson was teacher at Croft National School and lived at the school house in Croft, a neighbor of Dodgson, who grew up in the area. Dodgson photographed the Hobson family and the Hobson girls at least five times in 1857 (although he made photographs of the individual girls - namely Sarah and Eliza - no photo of Lydia by herself is recorded). Lydia would have been seventeen when Caroline Hume Dodgson inscribed the Alice to her upon publication in 1868, and the copy of Looking-Glass was inscribed at Christmas, as is sometimes seen - although the publication is dated 1872, it was released on December 27, 1871.
