SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. Published two months after the first edition. This copy was signed and presented by Lewis in June 1942; his inscription includes the Duke of Gloucester s famous retort to Edward Gibbon: What Mr. Gibbon? Always scribble, scribble, scribble eh? . RARE. Hooper 9 (recording the first edition).
