This was Robert Ruark s first novel and is a spoof of the historical romances that were popular at the time it was written (late 40s). The story centers around the life of a young woman born in New Orleans around the turn of the century. Her early years are spent under the care of a large African-American woman who is skilled in the arts of voodoo and a large gorilla. After Grenadine murders her first lover, the trio must flee New Orleans and progressively travel to Cuba, Australia, New Guinea, New York City, and a wide variety of other places (some of which are only hinted at in the story). Along the way she makes a fortune first in the slave trade, then by inventing and marketing cigarettes. They occasionally encounter famous people of the era, such as Ernest Hemingway, who are parodied. E-350; 8vo 8 - 9 tall .
