He toured America in 1872 to refute the anti-Irish sentiments of the English historian Anthony Froude. Burke is referenced by James Joyce in Dubliners for his speaking ability. This is a Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copy of the First Edition. Green cloth binding, heavily blindstamped, with titling in gilt on the spine. Clean text; 644 pages; followed by Burke s Five Lectures Against Froude, 103 additional pages. Frontis portrait of Father Burke. Mild rubbing to the tips and the head and foot of the spine and a few pages at the end with some creasing from turned lower conners. A beautiful copy, rarely seen in surchgood condition.
