First edition, rare first issue, of the memoir of the prominent composer and suffragette, printing several unexpurgated letters from Emmeline Pankhurst to the author. The letters, which detail hunger strikes, illegal meetings, and an escape from a house in Glebe Place surrounded by police officers, were printed without the permission of Panhurst's daughter Christabel. Copies were subsequently recalled and reset, and reissued with an alternate dust jacket. Female Pipings in Eden is the first book written by Smyth after her fateful meeting with Virginia Woolf in 1930 and was written in close conjunction with Woolf as reader and informal editor, who thought the book "as springy as a racehorse". Octavo. Photographic portrait frontispiece of Emmeline Pankhurst. Original orange cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge orange. With dust jacket. Light bumping to spine, rear inner hinge split but holding, spots to edges; jacket price-clipped, rubbed, spine toned, chips to edges of spine and folds: a very good copy in like jacket.
