The true first printing of this giant of American literature being the English first edition - published the best part of 6 months before the American edition. Scarce and sought after. All in original essentially very good condition. Original publisher s burgundy cloth - gilt embossed to the spine and to the front board. Light yellow endpapers. Wear with a little chipping of outer cloth - head and tail of the spine. All original boards/cloth. One unopened page between the title page and the preface - at the head. 2 expertly repaired short tears (with a paper glue) to the head of the final text page, where an unopened page was opened a little carelessly, and now hardly noticeable. what was probably the original bookseller and the binding diamond shaped paper onlay to the rear paste-down (Leighton son and Hodge). A contemporaneous and neat oval blind stamp of Some light spotting to the endpapers and fore-edges but chiefly free from spotting - the pages with a clean and bright appearance. A very good copy of this the true first printing of one of the all time giants of American literature. Scarce and perhaps even scarcer as a very honest copy.
