Contemporary English binding. Half blond calf with small corners, gilt fillet on the joints, pebbled paper boards, smooth spine with compartments separated by a double gilt fillet, central solar florets, gilt title and volume number, speckled edges, linings and endpapers of beige gray paper era. Superb copy in excellent condition (spine very slightly faded, minimal rubbing, very fresh interiors). pp. 58-59 of volume III bear red traces of dried flower. VERY RARE ORIGINAL EDITION OF THIS MASTERPIECE OF ENGLISH LITERATURE. The copy is complete with all its half-titles which are very frequently missing. It is, moreover, in a very elegant English binding, strictly of the period, which is not common. This famous novel by the English writer Jane Austen (1775-1817) was published without the author's name, a year before her death. Considered one of the creators of the modern novel, Jane Austen did not begin writing until the death of her father, the Reverend Austen, in 1805, in order to entertain her four brothers and sisters. Her first masterpiece, Pride and Prejudice, was published in 1813. Opposed to the exaggerated romanticism advocated by Ann Radcliffe, she developed an art full of subtlety and humor, centered on domestic life. Each volume bears
