The Novels of Jane Austen
by Jane Austen
$24,000 · Offered by Biblio
Earliest known Jane Austen dust jackets. Second printing 1892. Edited by Reginald Brimley Johnson. An incomplete yet incomparable set with eight extremely rare dust jackets on nine volumes (of ten): vol. 1 of Emma is missing, and vol. 2 of Mansfield Park lacks its jacket. Publisher's light green cloth with gilt decoration and lettering. Buff jackets printed on spines. Bindings fine, jackets good to fine. Most of the jackets have tape on versos (reportedly archival Filmoplast P added by a Scottish bookseller in recent years). The Pride & Prejudice jackets are the best in the set. Gilson describes buff jackets for an 1892 Dent edition but does not say whether it was a first or second printing set (perhaps this set) that he saw, both of which were issued that year. In any event, no surviving Austen jackets earlier than 1892 are recorded anywhere. Email: [email protected]
