1758. The Venetian artist Bernardo Bellotto (17211780) received his earliest training under his uncle, the renowned view painter Canaletto, and was admitted to the Venetian painters' guild at the age of just 16. During the 1740s he travelled widely throughout Italy, producing views of numerous cities, before being summoned to Dresden in 1747. The following year he was appointed court painter to Augustus III, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. Bellotto is now chiefly celebrated for his views of the great cities of northern Europe, widely regarded as his finest work, distinguished by their panoramic compositions, dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, and meticulous architectural precision. He occasionally signed himself "Bellotto de Canaletto", and is accordingly known in some traditions simply as Canaletto. This etching, after Bellotto's own painted veduta, depicts the long Baroque pavilions and arcaded galleries enclosing the courtyard of the Zwinger, viewed from one of the greenhouses of the royal Orangery and looking towards the Ostraallee and the Wilsdruffer Tor.
