New York: Macmillan, 1877. New edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Small octavo, 192pp., illustrated by John Tenniel. This is the first American edition under the Macmillan imprint (the true first American edition was published by Appleton). Spine gently cocked, mild discoloration to the outer joint gutters, and the page block is generally just a bit sprung. Mild wear at the crown, small area of toning to the title page at gutter (from a laid-in strip of paper), some pencil notations to title page and a few internally (all erasable with some dedication). Gift inscription dated Christmas 1877 on a front blank. With all flaws, still a near fine, better than usual copy of this early edition of Alice, which, in the same binding style and with the same illustrations, is nearly identical to the first edition.
