Complete set (eight volumes) of Theobald's Works of Shakespeare bound in speckled calf with gilt double fillet to boards and faded gilt lettering and volume number to spine. Raised bands, red morocco label and black morocco label to spines. Binding in good condition with cracking to spines, markings to boards, and rubbing and bumping to edges. Dusting to top edge. Foxing to end papers. Engraved Shakespeare portrait frontispiece in volume I. Divisional title pages and engraved frontispiece present for each play to every volume. Ownership inscription by 'John Waring' in pencil to upper pastedown of volume VII. Partially detached upper board and fully detached lower board to volume I and volume III. Missing flyleaf to volume II. Partially detached lower board and pages 155-158 detached and laid in, in situ, to volume VI. Horizontal tear half way down page 419-420 (final page of text), lower half of page held to upper with small pin to volume VII. Both boards detached to volume VIII. The set shows very nicely and is uncommon as a complete Shakespeare set from the middle of the eighteenth century.
