Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. 1870-1885. An extensive and coherent archive of incoming business correspondence, c.1870-1885, addressed to Messrs Joseph Thomas (later Owen Thomas) , corn, flour and ale merchants of Llanelly, Carmarthenshire. Approximately 168 distinct documents (c.325 leaves once fronts, backs/dockets and inner pages are counted) , comprising manuscript letters with their integral address panels and clerk s dockets, printed trade circulars, memoranda, invoices, and financial instruments including a bill of exchange, a promissory note and a run of dishonoured bank acceptances. Chiefly in English; one letter in the run is written wholly in Welsh (a flour and Indian-corn order). The papers document, in unusually granular detail, a small Welsh provincial merchant house running three overlapping trades from one counting-house: the wholesale and retail supply of grain and flour (oats, barley, Egyptian barley, 480-lb Danube maize, wheat flour in grades - extras, sharps, leather /best and plain ) , the milling by-products trade in bran and sharps, and the distribution of cask ale, porter and stout. Grain and flour were bought above all from Michael Harvey, corn and flour merchants of 34 Wind Street, Swansea (with recurring priced quotations, ex-ship cargoes and four-month bill terms) , supplemented by W. Lewis s Steam Corn Mills at Hereford and the Edinburgh seed house of Peter Lawson Son. Beer came from further afield: printed invoice-letters from Thomas Murphy Co. , br
