A large margined copy of this work in a wonderful condition. Some of the plates have been trimmed down. Each of the engraved plates have a tissue guard which has protected them from spotting. An important contribution to the field of Classical Italian topographical archaeology, at the time this was the standard work on the excavations of Pompeii. The original drawings for this work are by Sir William Gell, classical archaeologist and illustrator, while architect John Peter Gandy was largely responsible for the text. While title page states this was published from 1817-1819, tail of frontispiece specifies publication date as July 1st, 1819. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper To George Doudney Esq. With kind regards from his old friend William Gandy 1890 . The individual gifting this work is likely a relative of the author John Peter Gandy. Tipped in to the front endpaper is an obituary notice for Hannah Gandy, hand-dated 1902. Hannah Gandy was the niece of the author of this work. Her father was Joseph Gandy A.R.A.
