Mexico [City]: Fondo de Cultura Economica, 1959. Second Edition. Very Good/Very Good. Second edition of the landmark Mexican novel, signed by Juan Rolfo and inscribed to the recipient on the half-title page: "Por Max Cymet Ramirez con la cordial amistad de Rulfo. Mex - III - 67." 152, [3] pp., text in Spanish. Bound in publisher's beige cloth lettered in gilt. Very Good with lean to spine, light wear and soiling. Shallow abrasion to front free endpaper. In Very Good unclipped dust jacket with moderate edgewear, toning, and soiling, with splits started at the joints. Juan Rolfo's first and only novel Pedro Paramo, now hailed as a modernist masterpiece, sold poorly when it was first published in 1955. This second edition was published four years later in a print run of 3,000 copies; by the time Rulfo died in 1986, the book had sold millions of copies and was internationally famous. The writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote in his foreword to a later edition: "I could recite the entire book front to back and vice-versa without a single appreciable error, I could tell you on which page of my edition each scene could be found, and there wasn't a single aspect of its characters' personalities which I wasn't deeply familiar with.
