Gayl Jones was born November 23, 1949 in Lexington, Kentucky. Jones' love of writing was born watching and seeing the plays her grandmother wrote for church and the stories her mother would tell and write for Jones and her siblings. After receiving her Doctorate in Arts from Brown University, Jones would publish her debut novel "Corregidora" in 1975. "Corregidora" draws heavily on an African American tradition of oral storytelling, which gives the work a very personal and honest depiction of generational trauma, domestic and sexual violence, and womanhood.
