1949. hardcover. Very Good. Green cloth boards under orange dust jacket, titled Clippings , 10-1/4 x 7-3/4 . Blank pages with clippings affixed to first few pages, most clippings loose. At least 35 clippings, many of which mention Hugh Franklin. One is specifically about L Engle joining the cast of an Agatha Christie play to get color for her writing. Most articles mentioning her seem to be after she had published either her first or second novel. Laid in is a May 1937 broadside for The Tempest at Ashley Hall which features L Engle acting as Gonzalo. Ashley Hall was the boarding school she graduated from in 1937. Also present is a program for Little Hell by L Engle and Robert Hartung, at Columbia Universiry in April, 1946. L Engle was living in New York in 1946 and had just married her husband in January of that year. Articles are torn or cut, mostly from newspapers. The pasted-in articles are largely about the Lynn and Alfred Lunt, with whom Franklin traveled in I Know My Love by Behrman. L Engle was a better writer than scrapbooker, and the articles are not exactly in any order or even neatly clipped, for that matter. A unique artifact from an often unseen part of L Engle s life. Drama, whether her husband s career or her own obvious interest in it, is seldom discussed in criticism of her works.
