First edition
New York: Random House, 1979. First Edition. Octavo, 471pp. First printing, with number line descending to 2, and the words "First edition" on the copyright page. A crisp, clean, unread copy; sound and fresh. Remainder mark to the top edge. A gentle ding to the bottom corner of the front board has nicked the board (see image). Thus, a very good or better example. In a very good dust jacket, fresh and unfaded, with a small shallow chip to the top of the front panel, a 1-inch closed tear to the top corner of the rear panel, with some attendant creasing, and a small flattened corner crease to the front flap. With all faults, still a rather sharp and fresh example, with none of the usual foxing, and no fading to the lettering on the spine of the dust jacket. The jacket (and its noted tear) presents nicely in a clear archival protector (see image). McCarthy's fourth novel, Suttree, sold poorly, and around half of the first printing ended up remaindered. It wasn't reprinted until McCarthy's popularity soared in the early 1990s, when he published the Border Trilogy. As such, remainder marks are common on this title, and any copies without them should be carefully examined for their unscrupulous erasure.
