The Old Man and the Sea

by HEMINGWAY, Ernest; Alfred Eisenstaedt

$1,000 · Offered by Biblio

New York: Limited Editions Club, 1990. Limited Edition. Oblong folio, 81pp., illustrated with five photogravures by Alfred Eisenstaedt. A fine copy in the publisher's beige canvas cloth and blue calf spine, titled in silver. This is number 357 of 600 limited copies SIGNED by Eisenstaedt In the publisher's black clamshell box, lined with blue suede. Box with some gentle uneven sun-fading (endemic to most copies, it seems), but still quite lovely. Note that one of the illustrations in this copy was bound up-side down by the publisher. Priced just a little below market value for this reason. Eisenstaedt's images, which are reprinted here from the original negatives, were first used in the 1952 Life Magazine publication of the novel, which slightly preceded the publication in book form. The high-quality photogravure reproductions and the thick Arches paper do far more justice to the images than the original thin glossy magazine paper. Of the more recent large-format Limited Editions Club books, this one strikes us as one of the few bargains to be had in the secondary market. A beautiful production.
