Because of its frank language, the novel was first published anonymously, with an expurgated version released a year later under the title of "Her Privates We". T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, T.E. Lawrence and Hemingway were among its early admirers. Frederic Manning was an Australian writer who fought in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The novel tells the story of men at war from the perspective of an ordinary soldier. A few light fox marks on the fore-edges. A touch of wear to the brown cloth boards. Clean and crisp within.
