Octavo (19cm); red-orange cloth, with titles stamped in black on spine; dustjacket; [ii],[4],5-252,[2]pp. Hint of a forward lean, with the faintest touch of sunning to crown; a fresh, Near Fine copy. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced 7s.6d. net), edgeworn, showing gentle sunning to the red spine lettering, tiny nicks and a few thin chips to spine ends, with several edge tears and attendant creases at upper rear panel, and some trivial dust-soil; an unrestored, Very Good+ example. "A tour de force on the following trapeze: invitations go out to a group of people, all of whom have been responsible for the death of someone by negligence or intent. The island on which the party is gathered is owned by the would-be avenger of all those deaths. The events and the tension produced by the gradual polishing off of the undetected culprits are beautifully done. One improbability, well hidden, makes the whole thing plausible" (Barzun & Taylor 750). There is no getting around the racist title of the UK edition, which was changed to And Then There Were None for the American edition, published by Dodd, Mead in 1940.
