Wallingford, Berks., (book published by Collins Crime Club) 1970. [Literary correspondence] TLS, one-page. Octavo (18 x 14cm), Winterbrook House, Wallingford, 10th November 1970. Seven-lines, addressed 'Dear Mrs. Gould' and signed 'Agatha Mallowan'. With accompanying 8 x 6 inch bordered black & white photograph of the author opening the refurbished Harrisons Homes building (27th May 1970), INSCRIBED and SIGNED 'Agatha Christie'. In a contemporary moulded frame, mounted beneath glass. Total dimensions 27 x 22cm. Together with associated book 'Passenger to Frankfurt', published September that year. Letter with one soft fold, photo is fine (mount is toned), book is very good in faded jacket. Crime writer Agatha Christie was a generous benefactor of Harrison Homes, a UK-based housing charity providing homes for seniors and retirees. In the 1960s and 1970s, Christie was deeply active within the charity, making donations, consulting on building renovations (herself an elderly lady), and visiting residents accommodation. The present package relates to this charity work; the photo of the grand opening event was sent to the author for signing. Duly returning the item, her covering note explains "I never sign my own photographs, but in your case there is certainly an exception". She also confides "It is an excellent photograph". A nice genuine example of both signatures (her married name and maiden name, which she kept to write under), together with a heart-warming back story. RARE thu
