"The Memoirs belonged to a cluster of late 17th-century publications printed by Darby which included the Discourses of Algernon Sidney and the works of John Milton and James Harrington. They took advantage of the standing army controversy that followed the treaty of Ryswick in 1697 to promote the cause of the radical and country whigs" (ODNB).
