Rock Art in Oman. First edition of this pioneering study of prehistoric art in the Arabian Peninsula, which remained unsurpassed until Angelo Fossati's work of 2019. This is a self-published copy of the author's typescript, with nine institutional copies recorded and the original manuscript preserved in Oman. The first part examines rock art in Jebel Akhdar and illustrates its distribution in three maps, distinguishing sites visited by Jackli from those known through the literature. It concludes with observations on the relation between rock art and archaeological chronology, citing additional dating evidence such as middle Neolithic flints, the Umm an Nar tombs, ancient mines, and smelting furnaces. The longer second part, illustrated with dozens of half-tone photographic images, is a catalogue of major Omani rock art examples. These are categorized according to the motifs, such as animals, humans, weapons, ships, doodles, and dress, with subcategories highlighting the drawing style (e.g., wasp-waisted, raised arms). Sections are also devoted to Coleman's rock, near Hasat bin Salt, stone markings, and inscriptions in Wadi Bani Kharus. Rudolf Jackli (1924-2000) was a geologist and manager for Petroleum Development Oman in 1970-77. His personal interest in Omani rock art led him to cooperate with anthropologists Christopher Clarke and Keith Preston.
