The International System of Garment Cutting. Second edition of a foundational tailoring book. Included are direct and sectional measurement principles to alter patterns to various male bodies, such as "The Hunchback Figure" and "The Man with the Crutch". Joseph Patrick Thornton (1882/3-1935) was listed in the 1901 census as "tailor" and in that of 1911 as "pattern cutter". He was a director and taught at the Thornton Institute off Oxford Street and the Minister's Cutting Academy, whose alumni included the founder of the Parisian house Cifonelli.The first edition is likely to have been published in 1907 as The International System Gentlemen's Garment Cutting, as supported by Seligman and the lettering on the spine: "The International System: Gentlemen's Garments".
