Three bound volumes of The Strand Magazine, comprising Vol. I (January–June 1891), Vol. II (July–December 1891), and Vol. III (January–June 1892), published by George Newnes, London. An important early Strand set containing the first twelve Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle as originally published in the magazine. Volume II includes the first six Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, beginning with A Scandal in Bohemia, while Volume III contains stories VII–XII including The Adventure of the Speckled Band, The Blue Carbuncle, The Engineer's Thumb, The Noble Bachelor, The Beryl Coronet, and The Copper Beeches. Illustrated throughout by Sidney Paget. Volume I retains its original publisher's pictorial cloth binding. Volumes II and III are attractively rebound in half leather. Numerous illustrations throughout. Condition varies: Vol. I shows wear, rubbing, fading, and edge losses to the original cloth binding. Vol. II exhibits wear to leather, hinge separation and old endpaper repairs. Vol. III is in notably better condition with strong binding and bright gilt lettering. Interior pages generally clean with expected age toning and occasional foxing. A desirable early Strand set documenting the first appearance of the complete first year of Sherlock Holmes stories in magazine form. Condition Good overall. Mixed bindings.
