A letter from the author to Close is tipped in, thanking Close for his kindness and presenting him with this copy of his latest novel, "the best in my power to give as a memento of a friendship I shall keep green in memory". The novel is part of Phillpotts's "Dartmoor cycle", made up of 18 novels and 2 collections of short stories: "what Thomas Hardy did for Dorset, Phillpotts did for Dartmoor" (ODNB). Provenance: John C. Eckel (18581943), bibliographer of Charles Dickens, bookplate Katharine de Berkeley Parsons (18971993), bookplate H. Bradley Martin (19061988), his bookplate to the chemise, his sale, Sotheby's New York, 1 May 1990, lot 3094 - Stephen C. Massey. Octavo. Frontispiece with tissue guard. With 8 pp. of publisher's advertisements at rear. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover lettered in gilt with gilt border, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Housed in a custom blue quarter morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. Extremities slightly rubbed, minor foxing, still a fine copy.
