Original green cloth binding with minor shelfwear; protected in custom-fitted archival Mylar. Original dark green endpapers. All page edges are gilt-covered. Octavo (8vo) measuring 7.25 x 4.75 (185mm x 121mm). First edition, first printing with no mention of later printings on the copyright page. With a preface by George Saintsbury. Contains 101 black and white illustrations by Hugh Thompson. Frontispiece protective tissue guard remaining intact. Unrestored copies with bright gilt lettering and decoration are difficult to obtain. The corners of the covers/boards are very lightly bumped, the spine extremities are crimped but without the typical rubbing and fraying, and the rear board has a few small and minor scuffs and smudges and minor bubbling of the cloth near the spine. The half title page has a previous owner s blind stamp torn off, measuring less than an inch tall and less than 3 inches wide. The title page has a tiny tear to the fore edge. The first and final 15 pages of text have minor foxing. There is the beginning of page separation near the front and rear of the text, but all pages remain firmly attached. The text is clean and unmarked. .
