New York: Derby and Jackson, 1859. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. 305 pages. Hardcover in green cloth. The binding shows moderate wear and is sound with secure inner hinges. Evidence of some superficial damp spots to the cloth which does not affect the interior. Text is toned but is generally clean. Inscribed on the front flyleaf, "Maggie L.(?) Mongtomery / Greenwood / Rockingham, N.C. / from H. F. (or L?)" We are uncertain whether this book was inscribed to Maggie Montgomery by the author or by someone else with the same (or similar) initials. The last name initial of the presenter is hard to ascertain due to the script. The book recounts the author's travels through Europe, especially in Paris, with which he was quite taken. Fuller died in Paris in 1880 where he lived with his wife. Hiram Fuller (1814-1880) was a journalist and bookseller from Providence, Rhode Island. Although he was from New England, he was a supporter of the Confederate cause. He wrote several travel pieces and society articles, and he lost a lawsuit for libel brought upon him by Edgar Allan Poe. This volume came from an estate in Rockingham County, North Carolina. Some of the other books in the collection have the signature of "Robt. A. Montgomery" and notations of Greenwood. "Greenwood" was the name of the family estate. The family was also related to the Clack family of Rockingham County, with the main city being Reidsville, NC.
