Samuel Ajayi Crowther (1808-1891) was a Yoruba Christian missionary who became the first African Anglican bishop of West Africa. He accompanied several expeditions along the Niger, including the one described in the present work, and was one of the founding pioneers of Christian missions in Nigeria.
