"One of the greatest mountaineers of the day" and "perhaps the most popular mountain writer in English there has ever been", Smythe's work is distinguished by high quality photographic illustrations and "the mystical, quasi-religious tone which he gave to mountain experiences" (ODNB). This work details Smythe's discovery of the Bhyundar Valley in 1931 and his return in 1937 to the Bhyundar Valley, Upper Garhwal, and Banke glacier. Catalysing global interest, the Garhwal region was later declared an Indian National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Valley of Flowers also gained widespread pop-culture fame for the chapter "The Abominable Snowman".
